should twitter ban trump

Why doesn’t Twitter ban or suspend Trump?

Is there any special reason Twitter has never even suspended Donald Trump’s personal account @realDonaldTrump?, while it is constantly in clear violation of Twitter’s own rules?

Let’s take a look.

Why should Twitter ban Trump?

First off, let’s start by taking a look at Twitter’s rule on Civic Integrity:

“Civic Integrity: You may not use Twitter’s services for the purpose of manipulating or interfering in elections or other civic processes. This includes posting or sharing content that may suppress participation or mislead people about when, where, or how to participate in a civic process.”

This is a direct quote from the Twitter rules, found here: https://help.twitter.com/en/rules-and-policies/twitter-rules

Any infractions to the Twitter rules are usually met with a swift suspension, and repeat ‘offenders’ are regularly banned

Unless you are Donald Trump? Let’s take a look at some recent tweets:

Tweets where Trump claimed to have won:

i won the election

Donald Trump sent various tweets claiming to have won the election. Twitter is quick to add disclaimers like ‘Multiple sources called this election differently’, but hasn’t removed even one of these Tweets, to my knowledge.

Tweets where Trump claims there has been voter fraud:

rigged election tweetsDonald Trump sent a lot of tweets claiming the election was rigged. Twitter is quick to add disclaimers like ‘This claim about election fraud is disputed’, but hasn’t removed even one of these Tweets, to my knowledge.

Let’s read that bit about civic integrity from the Twitter rules again, just for a laugh:

“Civic Integrity: You may not use Twitter’s services for the purpose of manipulating or interfering in elections or other civic processes. This includes posting or sharing content that may suppress participation or mislead people about when, where, or how to participate in a civic process.”

In my opinion, Twitter could have taken different actions based on these Tweets:

  • They could have deleted individual Tweets
  • They could have suspended Trump’s personal account for a period of time
  • They could have banner Trump’s personal account all together

Why doesn’t Twitter do anything?

I can think of a few possible reasons why Twitter doesn’t take any action. Please note these are pure conjecture on my part:

  • maybe Twitter doesn’t want to lose the HUGE amounts of traffic and media attention they get thanks to Trump’s outrageous Tweets?
  • maybe one or several people high up in the food chain at Twitter are Trump supporters?

To wrap it up…

Be careful what you say on Twitter.

If you’re not Donald Trump, you can get suspended at the drop of a hat: interestingly, one of my Twitter accounts got suspended for a week after I commented on one of Trump’s tweets, calling him out on one of his blatant lies that he ‘won the election’. Half an hour later, my account was locked. Coincidence?

I will try to share this article on Twitter through a back channel… let’s see what happens!
